The collision of social media and the workplace is the topic of a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune that is an analogue to recent Agency Babylon posts and LinkedIn discussions about social media profile ownership.
The Star Tribune article, “HR and Facebook: It’s Complicated,” focuses on the use of social media profiles in recruiting and screening job candidates. The pitfalls of inappropriate Facebook and other profiles for individuals is well-documented. But what are the risks for the employer that uses this information to make hiring decisions?

My personal thoughts… LinkedIn is my professional presence online and Facebook is my personal presence. Both of them are part of who I am but neither is all of me. Unless you know me professionally AND personally, you won’t have access to both profiles. I will not connect with friends in LinkedIn unless I also have a professional relationship with them nor will I “Friend” a co-worker unless we have a personal friendship. I don’t have anything to hide in either profile, I just choose to keep the two separate.
